Congratulations to poultry intern, Kyle Venter, from the team at Chemuniqué! The AFMA Technical Committee has selected his nutrition poster, entitled: “The in vitro analysis of acid-binding capacity of South African feed ingredients for broiler chickens and possible effects on performance”, as the best Student Nutrition Poster for 2019.
Recognising excellence in animal nutrition
The Student Nutrition Poster Award is presented annually by the AFMA Technical Committee with the aim of recognising and rewarding excellence among animal nutrition graduates in their dissemination of nutritional knowledge through a poster presentation at an animal science congress. The award is designed to promote interest in industry-related research on animal nutrition, to increase the quality of student poster presentations in terms of scientific contribution, and to acknowledge excellence in this valuable medium.
The Poster Award Committee comprises five members who have been selected from the AFMA Technical Education, Development, Training and Skills Committee (TEDTS), including either the chairperson or vice-chairperson of the AFMA Technical Committee. The committee evaluates all student animal nutrition posters that are submitted to the South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS) for their annual congress. Kyle’s poster was presented at the 51st SASAS National Congress in Bloemfontein, which was held from 10–12 June this year.
Introducing the winner
Kyle Venter went to St Stithians College for the duration of his schooling and completed a bachelor’s degree in animal science at the University of Pretoria in 2018. He is currently a poultry intern at Chemuniqué (Pty) Ltd while completing his master’s study on acid-binding capacity of South African feedstuffs along with water acidification. Kyle was also on the winning team for the SASAS Student Quiz for animal sciences at the 2019 SASAS Congress. “I am passionate about making a difference in the industry to serve the future production of animals,” says Kyle.
The prize
As winner of the AFMA Student Nutrition Poster Award for 2019, Kyle has been awarded a cash prize as well as a complimentary registration to attend the annual AFMA Symposium and cocktail function on 29 October 2019 at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria. He has also been invited to present his research findings to the symposium delegates – an invaluable opportunity to open doors to his future in the animal science industry.
