Chemuniqué intern wins ag-writing competition

Hollard Insure, together with Farmingportal.co.za and AGRI NEWS NET, recently invited aspiring writers under the age of 28 to enter the Young Agri Writers competition. Articles relating to any agricultural subject were able to be submitted for judging. The top 10 articles each received a cash prize of R1 000, with the top three articles winning R10 000, R5 000, and R3 000 respectively for first, second and third places. The winning article has also been published on Farmingportal.co.za.

The agricultural sector is a vibrant and critical part of our economy. Young people need to have a voice and platform to also share their take on agriculture. As supporting better futures for all South Africans underpins all we do at Hollard, this is a perfect opportunity for us to partner with Farmingportal.co.za and AGRI NEWS NET and allow new voices to be aired.  We strongly believe in developing and growing young talent and look forward to the entries we will receive.  This is an exciting initiative, which AGRI NEWS NET launched earlier in the year, and we are excited for its potential, and proud to be part of this!

The results are in, and our very own Gareth Wilks was announced the overall winner with his article entitled: “Poultry in motion: A chicken’s guide to good choices“.

Gareth graduated with distinction from the University of Pretoria in 2019 with a BSc(Agric) degree in animal science, and joined the Chemuniqué team as an intern in 2020. He is currently completing his master’s degree where his research is focused on improving phosphorus utilisation in broilers by comparing the efficacy of novel phytase enzymes in young broiler diets using different sampling and statistical methods. Along with completing his post-graduate studies, he is currently the head limestone research coordinator at Chemuniqué and is obtaining valuable commercial experience in broiler nutrition and production.

Watch this space, this young man is getting ready to make his mark on the industry!
